lyree records: techno, versos y arte en cada surco del vinilo │ Entrevista - Interview │
Para los que disfrutan con el contacto físico de un release, para los que el vinilo forma parte de un ritual que debe ser cuidado al más mínimo detalle. Y, en especial, para aquellas y aquellos que consideren el techno en su máximo esplendor como una inmejorable vía para acceder a lo sublime: lyree records. Y me dejo algo, bastante importante, porque este sello, que muy pronto lanzará su primer release (con cuatro nombres para derramar sudor y tinta), viene también con versos, de la mano de su fundador: Valerio Polani.
Es raro que aparezcan sellos tan, tan cuidados desde el minuto cero (de hecho, desde la pre-order que ya puedes hacer ahora mismo), que tengan lo artesanal, lo gráfico, lo literario y lo musical tan bien pensado y trabajado. Por ello, ante el inminente lanzamiento del primer EP Sehnsucht el próximo 28 de agosto, con tracks de Conrad Van Orton, VSK, Yanamaste y Norbak, intercambié unas preguntas con el ideador de lyree. En esta entrevista, el italiano Valerio Polani nos cuenta, desde Berlín, cómo se ha lanzado a por el proyecto y qué hay detrás, en su base y en su belleza.
[Dudo de que te canses de pinchar este primer release. Si fuese el caso, igualmente podrías enmarcarlo. Porque cada milímetro de plástico y papel que sale de lyree es arte para el presente con vistas a la posteridad]

Vanity Dust: ¿Qué idea hay detrás de lyree y cuál es su filosofía como sello y proyecto artístico?
Como concepto, lyree tardó bastante tiempo en tomar forma. Necesité algún tiempo para conectar todos los puntos de manera adecuada. El término lyree proviene de “lyre”, un instrumento musical antiguo que solía representarse en las pinturas al fresco tocado por Apolo, el dios de la música y la poesía.
De hecho, lyree nació con la idea de conectar las dos artes. Todos los discos llevarán, de hecho, un poema escrito por mi dentro, escrito con la inspiración de la música y de la cubierta del álbum. Más allá incluso, cada cubierta será una foto hecha por mí, procesada, modificada y trabajada con un filtro pastel rosa. Le he dado mucho importancia al color en el sello. Es fundamental.
lyree nació con la idea de mirar hacia el futuro pero sin olvidar el pasado, más bien rindiéndole tributo.
lyree nació con idea de exaltar el esteticismo del sonido.
lyree nació con la idea de enfatizar la elegancia de aquella música que es capaz de tocar los acordes de tu esencia.

Para el primer release has elegido a Conrad Van Orton, VSK, Yanamaste & Norbak. ¿Por qué has elegido estos artistas en primer lugar? ¿Lanzará lyree más VA o también EPs y LPs de otros artistas?
Los he elegido básicamente porque están en el top de mis listas de favoritos y también porque tengo la suerte de ser su amigo y tenerlos a bordo. Estoy encantado y me hace sentir muy afortunado. Con Francesco (VSK) y Andrea (Conrad Van Orton) somos amigos desde hace algunos años (todos nacimos en Roma así que nuestra conexión es muy fuerte). Con Artur (Norbak) y Irakli (Yanamaste) la amistad es más reciente y vino, por supuesto, por nuestra conexión musical. Siempre he sido un gran fan suyo y trabajar en la escena como agente me ayudó mucho a estar cerca de ellos. Posteriormente también me convertiría en agente de Norbak, cuando ya lo era de Conrad Van Orton.
¿Podrías avanzar la fecha del segundo release y, a ser posible, de los artistas involucrados?
Por el momento estoy trabajando en el segundo lanzamiento: el objetivo es que salga a finales de año o como muy tarde en enero de 2021. Todavía no puedo anunciar quienes serán los artistas pero te puedo decir que no quiero hacer solo VA.
Cuidado al detalle. Así será cada release de lyree records.
El título del VA es Sehnsucht (“nostalgia”), ¿de dónde proviene la inspiración del título?
En realidad, esta es una larga historia. Sí, es cierto, “Sehnsucht” significa “nostalgia”, pero no la nostalgia como la entendemos literalmente. Conozco esta palabra en alemán desde hace unos diez años, mucho antes de mudarme a Berlín, gracias a un track de Ellen Allien con el mismo título (escuchar en Youtube). Desde el día que descubrí ese track, me entró la curiosidad acerca del significado del título y aprendí que la traducción exacta de “sehnsucht” en italiano, inglés o cualquier otro idioma no existe o, dicho de otro modo, no puede ser resumida en una sola palabra. Sehnsucht significa literalmente una enfermedad causada por un deseo anhelante. Y me encanta. La palabra y su significado me parecen muy profundos y románticos. No sé si la explicación queda muy clara, pero creo que escuchar el tema puede ayudar a entender ese sentimiento, creo.
Junto con el release encontramos poesía escrita por ti. ¿Qué es lo que el oyente/lector encontrarñá exactamente cuando reciba su disco? ¿Crees que la literatura y la música electrónica se llevan bien y que deberían tramarse más conexiones como la que tú haces en lyree?
Hay solo un poema que viene dentro del disco. La inspiración del texto es una mezcla entre la música, el artwork y, tengo que admitirlo, el período histórico que estamos viviendo y experimentando. La pandemia, el confinamiento y los nuevos sentimientos y contrastes que he experimentado en los últimos meses.
Estamos más acostumbrados a ver la música, y el techno en particular, asociados principalmente a las artes visuales (gráficas), por ejemplo, pero creo que cualquier tipo de arte encajaría bien. El arte, unido, es fantástico y el objetivo de lyree también es celebrarlo.
Mi intención y voluntad es que la gente que compre el disco tenga en sus manos una pieza de arte y no solo un vinilo de plástico. Hay fotografía, arte, literatura, todo en uno, y me alegra que gracias al vinilo los seres humanos podamos “tocar el arte” en el sentido literal del término.
Con un amigo cercano estamos también preparando una película breve para uno de los temas, que pronto saldrá en el canal de HATE como première.
Hablando de poesía, ¿hay algún libro o autor que te haya inspirado para crear la filosofía del sello, o alguna obra que nos puedas recomendar?
No, honestamente, este proyecto no nació inspirado por un autor o libro en concreto, aunque por supuesto puedo recomendar alguno de mis autores preferidos, como Chuck Palahniuk. También soy fan de Stephen King, de Charles Bukowski y de sus retorcidas mentes.
Recientemente, durante la pandemia, volví a releer dos clásicos: La metamorfosis de Franz Kafka (también porque compré el disco de Reeko inspirado en la obra) y el poema nacional italiano del año 1300 La Divina Comedia de Dante Alighieri.
Actualmente vives en Berlín, ¿podrías explicarnos por favor un poco la historia de cómo decisite mudarte a vivir en la ciudad y qué te llevó, en este sentido, a crear lyree?
Sí, llevo viviendo en Berlín desde hace más de 7 años. La razón por la que me mudé fue por la atmósfera transgresora que sentí la primera vez que pisé la ciudad ocmo turista. La actitud de la gente, tan solo con caminar por la calle, la importancia que sentí del “ser en vez del aparentar”. Berlín me dio la sensación de ser un lugar “real” donde podría encontrarme a mí mismo, dentro de mí. Básicamente, esto es lo que ocurrió, y creo que fue la decisión acertada. Por supuesto, la escena musical de la ciudad tuvo un rol importante a la hora de tomar la decisión de mudarme a la ciudad.
lyree llega con la intención de aportar a la escena un producto refinado, apasionado, real y estructurado que búsca capturar la estética y la calidad con fuerte intención de no ser un mero esclavo de las tendencias del mercado.
Además, como he mencionado anteriormente, trabajo en la escena también como agente para Urbanum y como booking manager en Disconnekt, pero tenía el deseo de ofrecer algo totalmente mío al 100% que pudiese reflejar mi visión y personalidad.

What’s the idea and philosophy behind the new project label you’ve created?
lyree is a concept which took a while (actually a lot) to take shape. I needed some time to connect all the points in the right way.
The word lyree comes from "lyre", an ancient musical instrument which was often depicted in the ancient frescoes while played by Apollo, the god of music and poetry.
lyree was indeed born with the intention to be the connection between these two arts. Every single record will in fact come with an insert, which will be a poem written by me inspired by the music and the cover of the record.
Moreover, each cover will be a picture taken by me, processed, modified and worked with a pastel pink filter. I gave a lot of importance to the color of the label. It is fundamental.
lyree was born with the idea to look at the future without forgetting the past, but rather praising it.
lyree was born with the idea to exalt the aestheticism of the sound.
lyree was born with the idea to emphasise the elegance of that music able to touch the strings of your core.
lyree was born with the passion for art and the will to extol it in all its forms.
For the first release you’ve selected Conrad Van Orton, VSK, Yanamaste & Norbak. Why have you chosen these artists in the first place? Will lyree release more VA or also EP or LP from concrete artists?
Basically I have chosen them because they are on top of the lists of my favorite ones and I feel very lucky to be their friend and to have them on board. That makes me feel over the moon. With Francesco and Andrea we have been friends for a few years (we were all born in Rome so our connection is very strong). With Artur and Irakli, friendship is more recent, and it came due to music connection, of course. I’ve always been a big fan of them and working in the scene as an agent and booker helped me to get closer to them. Lately I also became Norbak’s agent and I was already Conrad Van Orton’s too.
Could you advance the second release date and, if possible, the artists involved?
At the moment I am working on the second release: the goal is to release it at the end of the year or not later than January 2021. I still can’t announce who will be the artists but I can tell you that I don’t want to release only VA. Stay tuned!
The VA title is Sehnsucht (“nostalgy”), where does the inspiration for the title come from?
Actually this is a very long story. Yeah it’s true, “Sehnsucht” means “nostalgy” but not the nostalgy literally as we know it. I have known this word for like 10 years, way before moving to Berlin thanks to a track of Ellen Allien (ver en YouTube ). Since the day I found that track, I got curious about the meaning of the title and I learned that the exact translation for “sehnsucht” in Italian, English or any other language doesn’t exist - or better can’t be summed up in only one word. Sehnsucht literally means a sickness caused by a yearning desire. I love it. I find this word and its meaning incredibly deep and romantic. I don’t know if it’s clear but listening to the track can help to get that feeling I think.
Coming with the release we can find poetry written by you, what will the listener/reader find exactly once he gets a copy of the record? Do you think literature and electronic music get on well and should create special connections like yours?
There is only one poem which comes as an insert with the record. It has been inspired by the mix of the music, the artwork and I have to admit, also by this historical period we are living and experiencing. The pandemic, the lockdown, and all the new and contrasting feelings I have experienced in the recent months. Of course I believe literature and music go well together, but it goes well also any other form of art. We are just more used to seeing music, and techno in particular, associated mostly with visual graphics art for example, but I believe that any form of art would match. Art together is awesome and the purpose of lyree is also to celebrate it. My intention and my will is that people who will buy the record will be able to keep in their hands a piece of art and not just a vinyl on wax. There is photography, art, literature all in one, and I am glad that thanks to the vinyl we humans are able to touch art in the proper meaning of the word. With a dear friend of mine we also shot a short-movie for one of the tracks and will be premiered soon on HATE channel.
Talking about poetry, are there any books or authors that inspired you for creating the label’s philosophy, or that you simply like or recommend?
No, honestly this project wasn’t inspired by any author or book in particular but of course I can recommend some of my favorite authors: one in particular is Chuck Palahniuk. I’m also a fan of Stephen King, Charles Bukowski and their twisted minds.
Lately during the pandemic I started to read again two classics: The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka (also because I bought the Reeko’s records inspired by it) and the Italian national poem dating back to 1300 a.C. La Divina Commedia by Dante Alighieri.
You’re based in Berlin, could you please explain a bit your history about how you decided to live in the city and what brought you to create the lyree?
Yes, I have been based in Berlin for more than 7 years. The reason why I moved here was the racy atmosphere I felt when I first came to visit the city as a tourist. The attitude of people, even just walking on a street, the importance I experienced of being and not just appearing. Berlin gave me the feeling as a “real” place where I would have the chance to find the real me inside myself. This is what happened basically. I think it was the right choice. Obviously, also the vibrant music scene of the city played an important role in taking the decision to move here.
lyree comes with the intention of giving the scene a real, passionate, refined and structured product for the pursuit of aesthetics and quality with the strong intention of not being a slave to market trends.
Moreover, as stated above, I work in the scene also as an agent for Urbanum and as a booking manager for Disconnekt, but I felt the desire to give something totally mine at 100% that could reflect my vision and personality.
